Swiatek Ends ‘Most Demanding’ Season of Career After Injury Forces Early Finish

October 21, 2026

Iga Świątek has brought her 2026 tennis season to an early close, describing it as one of the most demanding of her career. The six-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from the Ningbo Open this week with a left thigh injury and confirmed she would not play again in 2026. The decision also ends her hopes of reaching the WTA Finals for the first time since 2019.

The 25-year-old Pole ends the year ranked ninth in the world after a campaign marked by inconsistency, coaching changes, emotional struggles and the absence of a major title. In a statement, Świątek said the intensity of recent seasons had taken a toll and that she needed extended time to rest and recover fully before preparing for 2027.

A Season Without a Grand Slam Breakthrough

Świątek’s most recent major triumph came at Wimbledon in 2025. In 2026 she failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals at any of the four Grand Slam events, marking the first year since 2021 in which she did not claim a major title. The result stands in contrast to her dominant run between 2022 and 2025, when she regularly contended for the biggest prizes and spent long periods as world number one.

Her sole title of the season arrived in August at the Canadian Open in Toronto. There she defeated Elena Rybakina in the final to secure a WTA 1000 crown. The victory provided a rare moment of release and celebration in an otherwise frustrating year. Świątek later reflected that the second half of the season brought encouraging progress, even if the overall results fell short of her usual standards.

She finishes 2026 with a 42-16 win-loss record. While solid by most measures, the numbers represent a clear step down from the consistency that once defined her play.

Injury and the Decision to Stop

The thigh problem that forced her withdrawal from Ningbo had already been an issue during the Wuhan Open. Świątek reached the semi-finals in Wuhan but lost to fellow Pole Maja Chwalińska while receiving treatment for the injury. Shortly afterwards she opted against continuing her Asian swing.

“After careful consideration, I’ve decided to withdraw from the tournament,” she said. “I’ve been experiencing an ongoing problem with my left thigh over the past weeks and I feel that giving myself the time to rest and recover is the right decision.”

In a broader reflection on the season, Świątek added: “The past few months, or actually the past couple of years, have been incredibly intense. I feel I need to rest and recover my body fully, so that’s exactly what I will do — a bit longer this time.”

She also expressed pride in the work completed in the latter part of the year and the confidence it gives her for the future.

Coaching Changes and On-Court Challenges

The 2026 campaign began under long-time coach Wim Fissette. In March the partnership ended and Świątek appointed Spaniard Francisco Roig, previously associated with Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu. The change was part of an effort to regain the mental and tactical solidity that had once made her such a formidable presence.

Throughout the year Świątek spoke openly about the stress and anxiety she felt on court. Unforced errors and emotional moments became more frequent. She was seen wiping away tears during the Wuhan semi-final against Chwalińska, a match that also highlighted the physical limitations she was managing.

These factors combined to make the season particularly taxing. For a player accustomed to deep runs at majors and regular appearances at the WTA Finals, the inability to qualify for the season-ending championships underlined how far the year had fallen short of expectations.

Looking Ahead to 2027

By stepping away now, Świątek gives herself a longer off-season than usual. She will return with the chance to complete a Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January, the only major title still missing from her collection. The extended rest is intended to address both physical recovery and the mental demands that have accompanied her high-level career.

Świątek’s decision reflects a growing awareness among top players of the need for sustainable schedules and proper recovery. After several years of near-constant intensity, the Polish star has chosen to prioritise long-term health over short-term competition.

The 2026 season will be remembered as a difficult chapter rather than a defining one. Yet the progress noted in the second half of the year, the resilience shown despite injury and the clarity of her decision to rest all point to a player determined to return stronger. For online tennis fans following her career, the coming months of recovery will be watched with interest as Świątek prepares for a fresh start in 2027.
